Custom Workshops

Departments and colleges can request customized workshops to be held during Weeks 3-9 of a quarter or during the longer breaks after summer and autumn quarters. (Please note, sessions must occur between 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.). To request a Carmen workshop, contact us.

Custom Carmen

Any of the regular Carmen workshops (view workshop descriptions) or workshops customized to cover specific topics in Carmen can be requested as a custom workshop for your group. We can tailor the workshop for your specific needs. We encourage departments to schedule workshops for faculty, new teaching assistants, or teaching groups.

Carmen Overview

This short demonstration course highlights the most commonly used tools in Carmen. The intent is to introduce faculty to effective and efficient uses of Carmen and to encourage brainstorming about how to incorporate Carmen tools into existing courses.

Regularly Scheduled Topics

The following workshops are offered during finals week through the third week of the following quarter. Additionally, workshop staff can answer individual questions for the 30 minutes following each session. View Events and Workshops for upcoming dates.

QuickStart

This workshop is designed for beginners, but is also good for users who want a better understanding of the default tools: Navigation; Preferences; Classlist and Email; News; HTML Editor; Simple Content.

Gradebook

The Gradebook is one of the most popular tools in Carmen, but users will find it much easier to use if they have taken this workshop: Setup Choices; Grade Schemes; Data Entry; Instructor and Student Views; Exporting Grades to a Spreadsheet; Transferring Grades to the Registrar.

Quizzes

Learn to create questions of various types and build quizzes with a variety of options and settings. Session includes a review of security issues and options.

Communication

Learn techniques and consider pedagogical strategies using Carmen's Communication tools: News; Discussion; Dropbox; Calendar; E-Mail; LiveRoom; Chat.

Best Practices in Content

Focus on effective uses of the Content and Files area in Carmen, learn to use Release Conditions, review options and techniques for using multi-media files. With interest, this workshop may cover optimizing Word and PDF files for easier downloading and accessibility. Optional: Explore content-related tools not included in the default course set.

Media Manager

Media Manager, created in the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, allows easy organization and sharing of media collections (i.e., images, video, audio, and other file types). Explore how to use and optimize Media Manager with Carmen in this hands-on workshop.
