Large Course-Departmental Impact Grant
The focus of the impact grant is to increase student engagement, facilitate greater instructor efficiency, or enable anyplace/anytime learning through purposeful technology use in a course impacting a large number of students. Financial (up to $15,000) and LT personnel (up to 200 hours) resources will be provided to the recipients.
Up to two recipients from the applicant pool will be selected per year by a committee of OSU faculty, staff, and student(s). The review committee requires four weeks for selection decisions. Recipients are chosen by a masked review process.
Who Can Apply
The following individuals associated with a large course (large course being defined as courses averaging approximately 250 or more students per term) or a key (mandatory, GEC, or required for major) course in the department:
- Faculty with 50% or greater appointment
- Course Coordinator
- Chair or Dean
When To Apply
The application due date is December 4, 2009, at 11:59 pm. The Impact Grant has an annual deadline near the end of the calendar year with the grant starting in early January. There is a built-in brainstorming, planning, and goal setting phase (approximately January to March) followed by a production phase (April to September), with supported implementation during fall term (September to December).
Why To Apply
Grant recipients will design a technologically-enhanced course meeting the instructional goals of the department which can then serve as an exemplar for other courses, both within and outside the department; moreover, recipients have the potential to build individual and departmental knowledge and efficacy around teaching and learning with technology.
- Recipients will receive up to $15,000 and up to 200 hours of LT staff time (funding requires a 1:2 ratio of in-kind support toward the project, such as faculty/staff release time, other fund source(s), equipment use, and so on).

Eligibility
- Grant resources will be used to impact a large or key course by increasing student engagement or faculty efficiency, or promoting anytime/anyplace learning.
- Applicant has not received another Impact Grant during the past 2 rounds (i.e., during the last two years).
Funding Stipulation
- A 1:2 ratio of in-kind support toward the project, such as faculty/staff release time, other fund sources, equipment use, and so on, is required.
- Funding may be used to secure faculty/staff release time, support a student employee, travel to a conference, buy necessary software and licenses, and acquire specialized training.
- Funding may be used for limited hardware and peripheral purchases.
- Up to $10,000 will be provided after a project plan is approved by a LT staff committee, with up to $5,000 provided after an assessment and completion plan is approved by a LT staff committee.

Recipient Will
- Submit written endorsement from chair, dean, or supervisor (not applicable if chair or dean applies).
- Collaborate with Learning Technology during the entire grant period (at minimum, once per month).
- Work with LT staff for agreed-upon LT design production services through completion.
- Co-produce a project plan prior to receiving the initial grant payment
- Co-produce an assessment and completion plan prior to receiving the final grant payment
- Participate in the grant outcome assessment.
- Manage personnel and costs associated with the project.
- Locate and hire potential employees in a timely fashion for expertise not provided by Learning Technology.
- Oversee expenditures associated with the project.
- Participate in idea labs to collaborate with other Impact Grant winners.
- Engage in at least one idea lab meeting during the subsequent grant round (i.e., during the following year).
- Contribute to description of experience in digital and/or print media.
- Provide a final report/document/artifact showcasing project development and outcome(s).
- Present at a CIO-sponsored event.
- Participate in the subsequent selection committee.
- Adhere to institutional policies.
- Obtain appropriate human subjects approval (such as Internal Review Board or IRB), if necessary.
- Obtain copyright clearances, if necessary.
- Include reasonable ADA compliance, in accordance with Ohio State guidelines.
Learning Technology Will
- Provide expert implementation training and pedagogical consultation in areas of classroom technology, audio/video use, usability, elearning programs, etc., for up to 200 hours during the grant period.
- Limited visual design work by LT staff may be available.
- Provide recipient-centered support and guidance throughout the grant period.
- Provide timely and responsive communication.
- Co-produce a project plan.
- Co-produce an assessment and completion plan.
- Produce a description of experience in digital and/or print media.
- Provide the campus community a transparent process and outcomes assessment.
Grant Limitations
- Recipients do not receive Learning Technology production services as part of the grant; however, production services may be purchased with the grant stipend.
- Learning Technology staff is available to consult in locating and hiring qualified individuals for production work.
- Funding may not be used to reimburse or pay for a graduate student's tuition and/or fees.
- Funding may not be used to upgrade a lab space.
- Funding may not be used to pay for duplicate work.
