Large Course-Departmental Impact Grant

The focus of the impact grant is to increase student engagement, facilitate greater instructor efficiency, or enable anyplace/anytime learning through purposeful technology use in a course impacting a large number of students. Financial (up to $15,000) and LT personnel (up to 200 hours) resources will be provided to the recipients.

Up to two recipients from the applicant pool will be selected per year by a committee of OSU faculty, staff, and student(s). The review committee requires four weeks for selection decisions. Recipients are chosen by a masked review process.

Who Can Apply

The following individuals associated with a large course (large course being defined as courses averaging approximately 250 or more students per term) or a key (mandatory, GEC, or required for major) course in the department:

  • Faculty with 50% or greater appointment
  • Course Coordinator
  • Chair or Dean

When To Apply

The application due date is December 4, 2009, at 11:59 pm. The Impact Grant has an annual deadline near the end of the calendar year with the grant starting in early January. There is a built-in brainstorming, planning, and goal setting phase (approximately January to March) followed by a production phase (April to September), with supported implementation during fall term (September to December).

Why To Apply

Grant recipients will design a technologically-enhanced course meeting the instructional goals of the department which can then serve as an exemplar for other courses, both within and outside the department; moreover, recipients have the potential to build individual and departmental knowledge and efficacy around teaching and learning with technology.

  • Recipients will receive up to $15,000 and up to 200 hours of LT staff time (funding requires a 1:2 ratio of in-kind support toward the project, such as faculty/staff release time, other fund source(s), equipment use, and so on).

Other Benefits Include

  • Connect to university personnel with a wide range of technology expertise.
  • Explore and implement existing or new learning technology in pedagogically sound ways.
    • Examples may include online computing resources, digital textbooks and mobile devices.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to support and learn across disciplines.
  • Contribute to the growing body of knowledge investigating ways technology can impact student engagement, faculty efficiency, or anytime/anyplace learning.
  • Include GAs in the course revision process.
